Samaria Gorge

Samaria Gorge National Park

The Samaria Gorge is the longest trekking gorge in Europe and the most famous of all. Thousands of tourists flock here daily during the summer season to hike from top to bottom. The gorge is located in the south of the Chania prefecture, in the largest uninhabited area of Europe, where there are no roads.

While the gorge is officially 18 km long, this distance actually refers to the hiking distance between the settlement of Omalos on the northern side of the plateau and the village of Agia Roumeli.

Testimonial

Summer 2022

Starting in Omalos: the beginning of the gorge. We parked the car there. It took us about 6 hours for the hike, but we also took many breaks. It’s strenuous but doable! The effort is worth it, it’s beautiful. You hike about 13-14 km through the gorge and at the end another 2 km to Agia Roumeli (the beach there is beautiful). The entrance fee is €5. There are plenty of toilets and water stations along the way where you can refresh and drink. In early September, there were not too many tourists, I actually found there were quite few compared to what I had read here. The gorge is also very dangerous in some parts! When you reach the bottom, there are some places you should pass through quickly as many stones fall there. I wasn’t really scared when I saw the warning signs, but when a large stone hit the ground about 40 meters in front of me with immense speed, I was terrified. But I survived.

At the end of the gorge, there is fresh orange juice and shortly after that, a bus that takes you to Agia Roumeli for €1.5. It’s only 1-2 km, but we were so exhausted that we took the bus. In hindsight, I wouldn’t do it again; it’s really not far! The ferry to Sougia costs about €10, and from there we took the bus, which leaves at 18:30 and costs around €5, back to Omalos (the beginning of the Samaria Gorge).

A Local Advises:

It’s important to be well-prepared. Wear sturdy hiking shoes, bring plenty of water, and pack some snacks.

Start early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and to have enough time to complete the trek before the last ferry leaves Agia Roumeli.

Stick to the designated trails, carry out all your trash, and avoid disturbing wildlife. Pay attention to safety warnings, especially in areas prone to falling rocks.
