Matala

Hippie Charm on Crete’s Southern Coast

Matala is a village on the southern coast of the Greek island of Crete. It features a safe natural harbor in the Bay of Messara, blessed with a fine sand and pebble beach. Many people choose this location for their Crete vacation due to its ideal position: centrally located on the southern coast yet far removed from the ever-expanding tourism industry on the northern coast.

Matala offers something for everyone. Although it has become a popular tourist destination, Matala has retained the charm and character of the quiet fishing village it was over 100 years ago. At the same time, it continues to embody the relaxed lifestyle of the hippies from the sixties and seventies.

Matala Revealed

Half of the beach is lined with shade-giving tamarisks that naturally draw your gaze to the impressive sandstone cliffs with their famous caves. The imposing rock formation juts into the sea at a sharp angle, creating one of the most unusual beachscapes in Crete.

Cafés and tavernas offer a unique view over the bay and out to the deep blue sea from their terraces. After a day at the beach or a stroll through the village, you can enjoy an unforgettable sunset over the Libyan Sea, looking out towards the islands in the direction of Africa.

Matala, with its magical blend of natural beauty, rich history, delectable cuisine, and warm people, is more than just a destination—it’s an experience that stays with you long after your visit. It’s a place that invites you to discover, explore, relax, and celebrate life.

A Local Advises:

If you prefer beachside parking, there are two spacious lots available for a fee. The parking near the beach is more economical, without, however, roof cover that provides protection from the sun.

The archaeological site of the caves is open to visitors (most of the times). Note that it is forbidden to stay during night time. Matala is really close to the Minoan palace of Phaistos, too.

During the Matala Festival in June, the area experiences particularly high levels of crowds.

Matala, Kommos, and Red Beach are part of the Natura 2000 protected areas of the European Union.
